Ipsy Glam Bag July 2017: Thumbs Down

Hello friends! Today, I’m back with another Ipsy Glam Bag review. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you know that I usually love my bags. This month though… is a whole different story. Read on to find out why!

I think the bag itself is quite cute; it has Gudetama, the famous lazy egg of Japan on it. And when you turn the bag around… you see its little tush! I like the bag, but I noticed on Ipsy’s twitter feed that many people were creeped out by the design. The design didn’t turn me off, but the smell definitely did! The moment I opened my bubble mailer, I was hit by a powerful smell of chemicals. It turns out, many people’s bags smell quite rank; Ipsy advised us to set it in front of an open window for several days… Um, what? I shouldn’t have to do that with a makeup bag, lol. I also don’t want to bleach the vibrant color of the bag. DSC_0601DSC_0602

And, here are the contents of my bag. I recieved a blending brush, an eyeliner, a brow pencil, a gel wash, and a mattifying toner.

Let’s take a look at the worst thing first: the makeup brush. It is by So Susan, and retails for $17.95. I’m sure it is a good product, but unfortunately it arrived caked in dried makeup… I have contacted Ipsy customer care, but they have yet to offer me a replacement or refund. It seems to be covered in foundation, and I did not have any creamy products in my bag. If something in my bag had leaked and gotten on my brush, that would have been okay. However, I have an unknown makeup source dried on my brush and I’m not cool with that. DSC_0605

Next, we have the Ciate London Wonderwand Gel-Kohl Eyeliner in the shade Black. This is a full sized product, and retails for $18. I was a little frustrated to receive another eyeliner pencil. You see, you can go on to Ipsy and rate the items in your bag; they are supposed to take your feedback into account when curating your bags. I have said on their surveys that I dislike eyeliner pencils at least 5 times. I am just a liquid eyeliner kind of girl. The point on this is hard and tacky, tugs on my eyelids, and hurts. The smudging brush at the end also failed to smudge out my eyeliner. The formula of the eyeliner just isn’t creamy enough for it to work. I kind of wonder if I received expired makeup…

Now we have the Brow Gal Eyebrow Pencil in the shade Espresso. This is a deluxe sample; a full size retails for $23. I would estimate this to be worth around $10. Eyebrow pencils are another thing I am not a fan of, and I have told Ipsy this many times in their surveys. However, this brow pencil is significantly better than others I’ve tried. It has good pigment, and blends easily. You don’t have to try hard to get a full, natural looking brow with this pencil.

I was pretty excited to see the Tarte Deep Dive Cleansing Gel in my bag. This is a small sample. Full size is $25, so I would estimate this to be worth $1.50 as it is only .25 fl oz.   I usually love Tarte products, and this is no exception. It contains algae and marine flower extract, which nourish and soften your skin. To me, it smells heavily of tea tree, which I think is a nice fresh scent. I think I’m going to use it nightly until it’s all used up!

The last item in the bag was the Avene Mattifying Toner. This is only 1/7th of the original size, so it is worth around $3. I was quite happy to see I was receiving toner, because I’m running low on the one I’m currently using. Furthermore, this toner is for oily, blemish prone skin… which describes me perfectly! Even though the sample is quite small, it will probably last me for a few weeks. And if you are curious, it smells of baby wipes. 😛

I incorporated the eyeliner and the brow pencil into today’s makeup:

Overall, I was not a fan of the bag. The makeup brush was unusable, I didn’t like the eyeliner, and the bag smells really bad. I was so-so about the eyebrow pencil… The things I really loved in the bag were the cleanser and toner. But, when I’m ordering a makeup bag, I would hope that there would be some makeup in there that I like. However, the number of good months I’ve had with Ipsy far outweighs the bad, so I’m not going to let this month’s negative experience put me off it. I’ll give it a couple more chances before unsubscribing. I hope you found this review helpful!

I’m not excited about the items in my bag this month either. Plus I am still waiting on my bag to arrive which is kinda weird because usually I would have it by now. So they sent you a used item??? That’s just crazy!!!

I don’t think they pay any attention to these quizzes. Also an eyebrow pencil and eyeliner pencil in the same bag …. smh. I understand why you’re not excited about the bag. Great post btw 😊

Thanks for the read! This was definitely the worst Ipsy bag I’ve gotten. I’m going to hold out a little longer… but if I don’t like the next bag, I will sign up for Boxycharm instead! I hope you get your bag soon!

I’m waiting for a GOOD subscription box to come around. I tried Ipsy out a few years ago and I never liked anything! I felt like everything I got was something I could have gotten for free at a counter or at Sephora. And like Janette said, I don’t think the quizzes count for anything.

That bag is kinda cute though lol

Hi April! Yes, it took them a while to get back to me but they sent a replacement. Actually, they sent me two replacements by mistake! The brush is actually very nice! It’s super soft and blends well 🙂
