Covergirl Melting Pout Review + Swatches

My makeup addiction strikes again! I was in Target, just minding my own business and walking towards the frozen section, when suddenly… I found myself in front of a big stand of new makeup. I have no idea how this keeps happening. Anyways, I found myself pulled towards the Covergirl Melting Pout display… Loads of gorgeous shades, ranging from pinks and reds to purples and blues. I picked out shades 110 and 115, and went on my merry way.

First of all, look at this packaging! So cute and sassy! Shade 110 (Evan-gel-ical) is a cool toned rosy pink. Shade 115 (Gel-ebrate) is a warm toned peachy-coral. The color of the packaging is actually very similar to the product pigment, which I appreciate. It can be hard picking out a drugstore lip product when you can’t see inside the package. I’ve been tricked before by off-base labels.

Let’s talk a little bit about the product itself. Covergirl’s product page says that their Melting Pout gel lipsticks are opaque, creamy, and comparable to a $20 liquid lipstick. They are supposed to “deliver a satin finish that’s not sticky or tacky.” Those are some pretty big claims for a $6.99 liquid lipstick! Today, I put those claims to the test.

The lipsticks are pretty darn opaque! I did both of these swatches with just one squeeze of the tube. They are also creamy upon application, as Covergirl states. Speaking of application, it’s next to impossible to mess it up. Most liquid lipsticks can be a pain in the butt, and you have to go around the edges with concealer if you have a shaky hand (like me). With these, you just have to glide a bit on and rub your lips together. If I tried doing that with any other liquid lipstick, my lips would be a clumpy mess. So, the low-maintenance of this product is a huge plus for me.

This is how these shades look on my lips:

Quick tip: make sure to exfoliate your lips before you apply! This product is NOT forgiving towards chapped lips. I had to take it off, exfoliate, and reapply because there was no way I was going to put up a picture of my lips looking like that. 😉

Now, time to address the claim that it dries down to a satin finish. The only satin-finish liquid lipstick I’ve used before is Colourpop’s range, so that will be my frame of reference. Honestly, the Melting Pout gel lipsticks don’t feel satin at all. They just look and feel like a highly pigmented lip gloss. They are sticky (in fact, I have hair stuck on my lips right now). They also have quite a bit of transfer. To me, these just don’t seem like a liquid lipstick. They are applied like lipgloss, look like lipgloss, and feel like lipgloss. That being said, I still love these. They are beautifully pigmented and a breeze to apply! Here’s a makeup look I put together based on shade 110.

I hope you enjoyed this review! What is your favorite liquid lipstick?
