5 Simple Tips to Create the Perfect Study Playlist

Sometimes, it can be so hard to get in the groove of studying; every little thing becomes a distraction. A ticking clock, a barking dog, a yelling sibling… These can all take our focus away from the task at hand. Music is one useful tool we can use to help us focus on studying and actually get something accomplished. Read ahead to find tips to create your perfect study playlist and get some work done!

1. Make Sure Music is Right for You
Before creating the perfect playlist, you need to make sure that music won’t cause more of a distraction for you. An easy way to test this is to put on some quiet/moderate music of your choice, and try to read one page of a book. When you got to the end, were you able to recall what you just read? Or were you distracted, and focusing more on the music than the words? If you were not able to focus and recall what you read, a quiet environment may be a better idea for you.

2. Try Classical Music
Studies show that when students listen to classical music, they feel peaceful and relaxed. And for good reason, too! When students in various studies listened to classical music, they showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure, as compared to listening to different genres or no music at all.

This music-induced relaxation reduces anxiety that students are often faced with before a test, and allows them to better retain the information that they take in.  Mozart in particular boosts mental performance; this is called the “Mozart Effect”. Give it a try!

3. Pick a Good Tempo
Music timed at 60 beats per minute (bpm) has been shown to be best for studying. It is slow enough to put people’s minds at ease, but fast enough not to induce drowsiness. You can find Spotify playlists comprised entirely of songs at 60 bpm! Pick some of your favorites to put in your playlist.

4. Make Your Playlists 40 – 50 Minutes Long
When your playlist has finished, it will remind you to take a break from studying. Get some fresh air, or eat a healthy snack! This will help keep you from getting burnt out.

5. Make More than One Playlist
When you listen to the same songs over and over again, you can get stuck in a rut. Studies show that when you introduce new songs into the mix, you subconsciously become more attentive and focused on what you are studying. It wakes your brain up! If you just want to have one playlist, it may be a good idea to replace some old songs with unfamiliar songs on a weekly basis.
